WiFi Keeps Dropping During Video Calls? Here's What to Do

You are halfway through a meeting when your video freezes, your audio sounds like a robot, and the dreaded "reconnecting" message takes over. Five minutes later it happens again. Everyone else seems fine. Just you.

Video calls are uniquely hard on a network because they need three things at once. Steady download, steady upload, and very low jitter. Most home WiFi is built for downloading big things in bursts, not for the constant give and take that a video call demands. Here is how to find what is actually breaking and fix it.

How Much Bandwidth a Call Really Needs

People assume video calls need huge speeds. They do not. The minimums are quite modest.

  • Zoom HD one on one: 1.2 Mbps up and down
  • Zoom HD group call: 2.6 Mbps up and 3.0 Mbps down
  • Microsoft Teams HD: 1.5 Mbps each direction
  • Google Meet HD: 2.6 Mbps up and 3.2 Mbps down

If you have a 100 Mbps plan, you have plenty of headroom. The issue is almost never raw speed. It is consistency. A connection that delivers 50 Mbps in fast bursts and then drops to 0.5 Mbps for half a second will break a call. The same connection feeding YouTube would look perfect.

Step 1: Run a Test While the Call Is Failing

The next time a call drops, do not close the window. Open our speed test page on the same device and run a test immediately. If your upload is below 3 Mbps or jumping around wildly, you found the symptom.

Better still, leave the test running on a phone next to the call. If the phone shows fine speeds while the laptop drops, your laptop or its WiFi adapter is the problem.

Step 2: Get Closer or Get Wired

This is the single most common fix for dropped calls. Look at where you are sitting and where the router is. WiFi loses about half its strength for every wall it passes through, and laptop antennas are weaker than phone antennas.

Two practical changes:

  • If the router is in the next room, take your next call from the same room as the router for one day and see if drops stop. If they do, you have your answer.
  • If you can run a single ethernet cable to your desk, do it. A 25 foot flat cable costs around $10 and will end almost every video call problem you have. USB ethernet adapters work for laptops without an ethernet port.

Step 3: Switch to the 5GHz Band

The 2.4GHz band is crowded and slow. The 5GHz band has more channels, less interference, and far more bandwidth. Most modern laptops and routers support both, but some default to whatever they connected to first.

On Windows, click the WiFi icon, find your network, click Properties, and look for the band. On a Mac, hold Option and click the WiFi menu to see the channel and band. If you are on 2.4GHz and you are within 30 feet of the router, switch to 5GHz.

If your network only shows one name, you may want to split the bands into separate SSIDs in your router settings. That gives you direct control over which one your laptop joins.

Step 4: Find Out What Is Hogging Your Upload

Calls die from upload starvation more than anything else. A few common culprits:

  • Photo backups to iCloud, Google Photos, or OneDrive triggered by a new batch of photos
  • Cloud storage syncing a large folder
  • Security cameras uploading to the cloud
  • Game consoles uploading patches or saves
  • Someone else in the house posting videos or live streaming

Step 5: Set Up QoS for Calls

Quality of Service is a router setting that prioritizes one type of traffic over another. Setting video calls to high priority means your call traffic gets out of the house first, even if someone is uploading a giant file at the same time.

Most modern routers have a simple QoS toggle for video calls or work from home. Some let you pick a specific device and pin it to high priority. Our walkthrough on setting up QoS applies just as well to calls as to streaming.

Step 6: Update Your WiFi Driver and Router Firmware

An out of date WiFi driver on your laptop is one of the most overlooked causes of dropped calls. Manufacturers ship fixes for connection bugs all the time.

On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right click your WiFi card, and choose Update Driver. On a Mac, system updates usually include WiFi fixes.

Step 7: When the Problem Is the Other End

Sometimes you are fine and the meeting is broken for everyone. Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet all have status pages. If your call freezes for everyone at the same time, check there before blaming your router.

You can also try a different platform briefly. If a Zoom call freezes but a Google Meet works perfectly on the same connection, you know the issue is not your network.

The Most Reliable Setup

If video calls are part of your job, the answer that almost never fails is this. Run an ethernet cable to your desk. Use a wired USB headset, not Bluetooth. Pause cloud sync apps before big calls. And if your router is more than four years old, replace it with something modern.

That setup will outlast any WiFi tweak you can make, and you will stop being the person whose video freezes mid sentence.
