Login Steps

Accessing your router admin through 192.168.86.1 address will allow you to change the settings and configurations that your router software provides. Check the address you input not to confuse it with 192.168.86.l.

1. Connect to Your Router

   Connect your computer or phone to the router via WiFi or Ethernet. Ethernet is more reliable for accessing the admin panel.

2. Open Your Browser

   Open any web browser. Type the IP address into the address bar (not the search bar) and press Enter. Enter 192.168.86.1 into the address bar.

3. Enter Your Login Credentials

   Enter the default username and password. If they don't work, check the sticker on the bottom of your router.

• Connection

  Make sure you're on the router's network (not mobile data). Check that all indicator lights are on.

• Reboot

  Unplug the router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes before trying again.

• Firewall

  Temporarily disable your firewall or security software, as it can block access to local admin pages.

• Check the Address

  Type the IP in the address bar, not the search bar. Make sure it starts with http:// and uses numbers, not letters. The address is 192.168.86.1, not 192.168.86.l.

Configure Your Router at 192.168.86.1

Most people need this for gaming or remote desktop access. Be careful only to open ports you actually need since this can create security risks.

Parental Controls

Google Nest WiFi, Google WiFi, and older Google OnHub routers all use 192.168.86.1 as their default. You'll see this address printed on the label stuck to the bottom of your Google router.

Private vs. Public IP Addresses

The address 192.168.86.1 only works inside your home network. It's what we call a private IP address. Your internet provider can't see it and people on the internet can't connect to it directly. Only devices connected to your Google router can reach 192.168.86.1.

Your router also has a public IP address that your internet provider gives it. That public IP is what websites see when you visit them. But 192.168.86.1 is just for managing your router locally. You can't access 192.168.86.1 from your phone if you're connected to cellular data instead of your home WiFi.

Think of 192.168.86.1 like an apartment number inside a building. People outside the building can't use that apartment number to find you, but everyone inside the building knows exactly where apartment 192.168.86.1 is located.

How Your Router Assigns IP Addresses

Your Google router uses 192.168.86.1 as its own address, then hands out other addresses in the 192.168.86.x range to your devices. Your phone might get 192.168.86.25 while your laptop gets 192.168.86.31. The router keeps track of which device has which number.

You can see all the devices and their assigned IP addresses by logging into 192.168.86.1 and checking the connected devices list. The router automatically gives out these addresses so devices can talk to each other and reach the internet through 192.168.86.1.

Find Your Router's IP Address

If 192.168.86.1 doesn't work in your browser, your router might be using a different address. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type "ipconfig". Look for "Default Gateway" and that's your router's real IP address. On Mac, go to System Preferences, then Network, and click Advanced to see the router's IP.

Some Google routers might use 192.168.86.1 but be set to a different address by your internet provider. Try 192.168.1.1 or check the sticker on your router for the correct address if 192.168.86.1 fails to load.

Secure Your Router

Change the default admin password immediately after logging into 192.168.86.1 for the first time. Many Google routers ship with "admin" and "admin" as the username and password, which means anyone connected to your WiFi can access 192.168.86.1 and change your router settings.
