How to Update Your Router Firmware
Router firmware is the operating system that runs on your router. Manufacturers release firmware updates to fix security vulnerabilities, improve performance, and add new features. Keeping your firmware up to date is one of the most important steps you can take to secure your home network.
Why Update Firmware?
- Patches security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers
- Fixes bugs that cause connectivity issues or random reboots
- Improves WiFi performance and stability
- Adds new features or improves compatibility with newer devices
Method 1: Auto-Update (Recommended)
Most modern routers (2018 onwards) include an automatic firmware update option. Log into your router admin panel and look for 'Firmware Update', 'Software Update', or 'Auto-Update' in the Administration or System section. Enable automatic updates if available.
Method 2: Manual Update
- Log into your router admin panel.
- Navigate to Administration → Firmware Update (exact name varies by brand).
- Click 'Check for Updates' — the router will check the manufacturer's server for a newer version.
- If an update is available, click 'Update' or 'Download and Install'.
- The router will download and apply the update — this takes 3–5 minutes.
- Do not power off the router during the update.
Method 3: Manual Download and Upload
For routers that do not have automatic update checking, download the latest firmware from the manufacturer's website (search for your exact model number). In the router admin panel, go to Firmware Update and use the 'Choose File' or 'Browse' button to select the downloaded firmware file, then click 'Upload' or 'Apply'.
After Updating
The router will reboot after applying the update. Your settings are usually preserved, but it is a good idea to note your settings before updating in case a reset is needed.
