How to Change Your WiFi Password

Changing Your WiFi Password
Changing your WiFi password is one of the most important things you can do to secure your home network. This guide shows you how to do it on any router.
Before You Start
You will need: access to your router's admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1), and the admin username and password. If you have never changed these, they are likely the defaults printed on the router label.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Connect to your router via WiFi or an Ethernet cable.
- Open a web browser and type your router's IP address in the address bar (not the search bar). Common addresses: 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1.
- Enter your admin username and password. If you have not changed these, check the defaults list above or the label on your router.
- Navigate to Wireless Settings, WiFi Settings, or similar. On some routers, this is under 'Basic Setup' or 'Wireless Network'.
- Find the 'Password', 'Pre-Shared Key', or 'Security Key' field.
- Enter your new password. See below for tips on choosing a strong password.
- Click Save, Apply, or OK to confirm.
- Reconnect all your devices with the new password.
Tips for a Strong WiFi Password
- Use at least 12 characters — longer is better
- Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols
- Avoid obvious words, names, birthdates, or addresses
- Consider using a passphrase — three or four random words are both strong and memorable (e.g., 'BlueSkyRadio42!')
- Do not reuse passwords from other accounts
After Changing Your Password
You will need to reconnect every WiFi-connected device in your home: smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, game consoles, smart home devices, and printers. Make a note of the new password in a secure location.
