Can't reach the login page
Make sure you're connected to the AVM FritzBox router via WiFi or ethernet, not mobile data. Type http://192.168.178.1 in the address bar. If it still won't load, unplug the router for 30 seconds and try again.
-
Default credentials not accepted
Check the sticker on the bottom of your AVM FritzBox router. The actual username and password are printed there. If those don't work either, someone changed them. You'll need to factory reset.
-
Router stops working after changes
Reset to factory defaults: hold the reset button on the back of your AVM FritzBox router for 10-30 seconds. Wait 2-3 minutes for it to reboot, then log in again.
-
Forgot the admin password
A factory reset is the only way back in. This wipes all settings, including your WiFi name and password. You'll need to set everything up again after the reset.
-
Settings won't save
Use an ethernet cable instead of WiFi when making changes. Some AVM FritzBox routers drop the connection during saves, which causes errors.
About AVM FritzBox Routers
AVM started in Berlin in 1986 and became Germany's leading router manufacturer. The company focuses on FRITZ! products, with FritzBox routers dominating European markets. AVM FritzBox routers run FRITZ!OS, a custom operating system that sets them apart from other brands.
AVM FritzBox routers gained popularity across Europe, Asia, and Latin America because of their reliable DSL and fiber connections. The company ships millions of FritzBox units annually, making them a top choice for ISPs and home users. Many European internet providers bundle AVM FritzBox routers with their service plans.
Home users choose AVM FritzBox routers because they work reliably out of the box. The FRITZ!OS interface is easier to understand than most router admin panels. You don't need technical knowledge to set up basic features like WiFi or port forwarding.
AVM FritzBox routers also include built-in features that other brands charge extra for. You get a DECT phone base, media server, and VPN client without buying additional hardware. The automatic updates keep your FritzBox secure without manual intervention.
Accessing the AVM FritzBox Admin Panel
AVM FritzBox routers use a web-based admin panel called FRITZ!Box interface. You access this panel through any web browser on your computer or mobile device. The interface lets you configure WiFi settings, manage connected devices, and update your router's firmware.
Most AVM FritzBox routers use 192.168.178.1 as their default IP address. Type this address into your browser's address bar to reach the login page. Some older FritzBox models might use 169.254.1.1 or fritz.box as the address.
You can also type "fritz.box" directly into your browser instead of the IP address. AVM FritzBox routers recognize this domain name and redirect you to the admin panel automatically. Check the sticker on your FritzBox if these addresses don't work.
AVM FritzBox routers often have blank passwords by default, which confuses many users. When you see the login screen, leave the password field empty and click login. Some FritzBox models ask you to create a password during first setup.
If your browser shows "fritz.box can't be reached," your FritzBox might be in a different IP range. Try 192.168.1.1 or check your network settings. Sometimes Windows firewall blocks access to the FritzBox interface, so temporarily disable it to test.
AVM FritzBox routers running newer FRITZ!OS versions might redirect you to a setup wizard instead of the main interface. Complete the wizard first, then you can access all advanced settings. Don't skip the wizard or you might have connection problems later.
Popular AVM FritzBox Models
The AVM FritzBox 7590 is popular for fiber and DSL connections, using admin/blank as default credentials. FritzBox 7530 models also use admin/blank and work well for most home internet plans. The FritzBox 6660 Cable targets cable internet users and keeps the same admin/blank combination.
Older AVM FritzBox models like the 7490 and 7390 might have different defaults. Check the label on your specific FritzBox for the exact credentials. Some ISP-branded FritzBox units come with custom passwords printed on the router label.
The newer FritzBox 7590 AX and 6690 Cable models force you to set up a password during initial configuration. You won't find default credentials for these units because FRITZ!OS creates unique passwords automatically.
AVM FritzBox cable models often have different IP addresses than DSL versions. Cable FritzBox routers might use 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.178.1. Check your specific model's documentation if the standard IP doesn't work.
ISP-customized AVM FritzBox routers sometimes have modified login procedures. Your internet provider might have changed the default credentials or disabled certain features. Contact your ISP if you can't log in to a provider-supplied FritzBox.
Troubleshooting AVM FritzBox Login Issues
When you can't reach your AVM FritzBox admin panel, check if you're connected to the FritzBox network. Look for "FRITZ!Box" followed by numbers in your WiFi list. Connect to this network first, then try accessing 192.168.178.1 again.
Some AVM FritzBox units enter recovery mode if they detect problems. The power LED blinks red when this happens. Unplug your FritzBox for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 2-3 minutes for the LED to turn solid green before trying to log in.
Most AVM FritzBox routers ship with no password set, so leave the password field blank when logging in. If blank doesn't work, look for a sticker on your FritzBox with custom credentials. ISPs sometimes set passwords before shipping FritzBox units to customers.
If someone changed the FritzBox password and you forgot it, you'll need to reset the router. AVM doesn't provide password recovery options through their support system. Write down your new password after resetting to avoid this problem again.
After resetting your AVM FritzBox, it returns to factory defaults with a blank password. You'll need to run through the initial setup wizard again. The wizard configures your internet connection and creates new WiFi credentials.
Your FritzBox will lose all custom settings after a factory reset. Save your configuration before resetting if possible. FRITZ!OS includes a backup feature in System > Backup that saves your settings to a file.
How to Factory Reset a AVM FritzBox Router
Reset your AVM FritzBox when you forget the admin password or when the router stops responding to configuration changes. Factory reset also fixes corrupted settings that cause connection problems.
Locate the reset button on your AVM FritzBox, usually on the back panel near the power connector. Keep your FritzBox powered on during the reset process. Press and hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds using a paperclip or similar tool.
The power LED will start blinking during reset, then turn solid after the process completes. Don't unplug your FritzBox while the LED is blinking or you might damage the firmware. Wait for the LED to turn solid green before releasing the reset button.
Some AVM FritzBox models require a different reset procedure. Hold the DECT and WiFi buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds on models without a dedicated reset button. Check your specific FritzBox manual if the standard reset doesn't work.
Your AVM FritzBox will restart with factory settings after reset. Connect to the default WiFi network printed on your router label, then open 192.168.178.1 in your browser. Follow the setup wizard to configure your internet connection and create new admin credentials.
